My Fellow Texans,

The first two United States Senators from Texas were Sam Houston, an Independent, and Thomas J. Rusk, a Democrat, the namesake of my home county, Rusk. All together there have been twenty-six Democrats that served Texas in the United States Senate, six Republicans, and one Independent. Your United States Senate seat does not belong to a single party. It belongs to us, as Texans.

Fiercely independent, the Texas spirit that demanded progress and solutions to our problems is still present today in all of us. Working together with the conviction of our values we can continue to lead this great nation in the fields of energy, education, health care and science. For over 150 years the Democratic party led the way building highways, transportation infrastructure, educational systems and health care. It was at times hard and difficult but we solved the problems of our state and reflected the hard working people of Texas.

I am a Democrat proud of that heritage. It is a heritage shared by most of you with parents and grandparents that were proud Democrats that built this great State. Problem solvers, seeking the right solutions to our problems with the conviction that tomorrow can and will be better. Today, it seems we spend a lot of our time calling each other conservative or liberal, moderate or progressive.

I want us to be problem solvers committed to the principles of this great country. Those principles are larger than a label – they live inside each of us. They are what made this country great. Join me as we return to that heritage, help me restore dignity and respect to our public institutions. One election at a time we can restore our faith in each other – it begins here and now, with the election of your next United States Senator.
