Different Welding Methods
There are many different kinds of welding methods, each with its own applications, advantages, and disadvantages. Here are the four basic types of welders and their primary uses.
TIG Welding
TIG is short for Tungsten Inert Gas welding and as the name implies, it uses inert gases like helium and argon so that the welded area is protected from atmospheric contamination. It produces a solid and high-quality weld. But TIG welding is a difficult process to learn and to master. If you want high quality but an easy type of welding, then you should go for TIG welding. TIG welding is ideal for aluminum welding. Add a TIG welder to your welding kit.
Gas Welding
If you use a gas welder, then you need fuel gases or liquid fuels and oxygen to weld or cut metals. When the environment is not ideal, i.e. when in outdoor areas or windy areas, then gas welding is very useful. Heating is gas welding is slow and larger areas are affected and so the weld is not so strong and no so high in quality. Gas welding is ideal when welding thin material or when doing simple repairs. The base material does not dilute much.
Electron Beam Welding
A beam of high-velocity electrons is used to join materials with electron beam welding. When electrons collide with the surface, energy and heat are imparted. With this type of welding, the highest quality of welding is produced which is exceptionally accurate. You will find this type of welding has expensive equipment and training cost and it is hard to come by. This type of welding should be used if your welding job needs extreme precision. Nuclear welds and spacecraft use this type of welding.
Plasma Arc Welding
There is a similarity between Plasma Arc Welding and TIG welding but in plasma arc welding, the beam and gas envelope is not allowed to be separated. This type of welding is ideal for tiny areas. And concentration is required more for this type of welding than for others. The industry that uses this type of welding is the aircraft manufacturing industry. The high rate of accuracy of this type of welder and its use in extreme temperatures is an advantage of this type of welding. It also has the ability to create deeper welds.
Another type of welding is the stick welding which is the most basic type of all. This method is useful for basic welding jobs.
TIG welding is the most popular in the market today compared with other welding methods. So, if you are learning to be a professional welder, focusing on TIG welding is the most appealing.
Finding the place where there is most work as a welder should be your focus as you start your studies on being a professional welder.
