Getting Down To Basics with

All about DNA Testing Works

There have already been numerous people who have tried out DNA testing to learn more about their roots. Basically, it is now easier to get your hands on these testing kits. In reality, there are more people who’ve used consumer DNA tests than the reports gathered in the years before 2018. Due to the reason that there are increasing number of people believed to use it, it’s projected to boom at around 100 million years just in the next two years.

There is no doubt with the hype but there is the question that most people asked, how DNA testing works?

There is no straightforward answer here since the company releasing such kits is using proprietary algorithms in handling DNA data. On the other hand, there are a number of things that you have to be aware of if you are really interested to try DNA testing. First, let’s begin with the basics, DNA tests can help in revealing secrets or even discover things that you don’t even knew.

Where a person roughly came from, how closely you’re related to other members who are in the database and if you have specific traits are only few of the things that DNA tests can reveal. What you would get will depend on what you have ordered but, one thing is for sure, you can learn whether you’re half of something and the other.

The DNAs basic building blocks are the person’s spit and the provider’s code. As for the spit, it’s pretty self-explanatory. What you have to do is to spit into a tube and send it to the provider and after receiving it, it’s their responsibility to extract DNA from the sample and have it digitized so by that, it can be stored in the database and make a profile.

As soon as it is digitized, DNA exists as string of 4 nucleobases of DNA which includes C, G, T and A. This is now the time when the algorithm of the provider would kick in to do DNA testing and it is where things are more complex.

The algorithms are so powerful that it can pull out C’s, G’s, T’s, and A’s. By finding patterns, they can then derive the meaning. Every company uses pattern-spotting algorithm to which everything remains a secret. On the other hand, there are about 600,000 positions to which human DNA codes differ and these are otherwise known as single-nucleotide polymorphisms.

After the DNA testing, it’ll be saved in DNA library along with other DNAs where it can tell where your DNA is found on earth.
